EDP Review by Alison Croose
Lionel Bart's much-loved Dickensian musical made a welcome return to the West Norfolk stage with a triumphant production by King's Lynn Operatic and Dramatic Society.
Director Liz Dickerson and musical director Sam Ashby assembled a talented cast and a splendid orchestra to stage this popular show on an impressive set. Everything gelled - and the audience's cheers demonstrated their approval.
The opening number, Food, Glorious Food, was delivered by two dozen youngsters with great impact and energy, giving the production a rousing start. Within minutes Oliver's first solo, Where Is Love, was sung so movingly by 14-year-old Sam Miller the audience knew a special evening was in store.
The appearance of two stalwarts of the West Norfolk stage, Sarah Krill as Nancy and Chris Fox as Fagin, added even more strength as each gave their own interpretations of the classic character roles.
Adam Howard as the threatening Bill Sykes added to the atmosphere of the seedy underworld, his violent demeanour providing a foil for Chris Fox's portrayal of a kindly Fagin.
Oliver! is packed with great musical numbers and their powerful delivery by the large cast made a major contribution to the entertainment.
